I own a property in an Historic District. What do I need to know?
Properties in Historic Districts need to comply with the City's Landmarks Preservation Ordinance. The goal of this ordinance is to ensure exterior changes to locally designated historic properties are compatible with the historic character of the individual property itself and of the district as a whole. To accomplish this goal, the Landmarks Ordinance requires that the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission (ILPC) review proposals for any change to the exterior or site of a locally designated historic structure. The approval of this work is called a Certificate of Appropriateness. (All work reviewed by the ILPC also requires a Building Permit, issued by the City of Ithaca Building Division.)
