Common Council Vacancy- 3rd Ward
Ward 3 Alderperson Jeffrey Barken has announced his intent to resign from Common Council on June 28, 2023. The City of Ithaca extends its appreciation to Alderperson Barken for his service to our community and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
Common Council is actively searching for a resident of the 3rd Ward to fill this seat until the end of the current term, December 31, 2023. Third Ward residents interested in representing the 3rd Ward and the City of Ithaca in this capacity should forward a letter of interest and resume to the City Clerk’s Office at clerk@cityofithaca.org no later than 12:00 noon on May 25, 2023. All expressions of interest will be reviewed and considered by a Selection Committee pursuant to the Common Council Rules of Procedure. The Selection Committee will conduct interviews, which will be recorded and made available to Council and the public, before forwarding a recommendation for a vote by Council at the June 7 meeting. The selected applicant will be sworn in on July 5.
Once approved, this 3rd Ward Alderperson will serve on Common Council until December 31, 2023. The vacant Council seat will be placed on the ballot and filled by the successful candidate in the 2023 General Election, along with all council seats and the mayor.
In addition to serving the constituents of the 3rd Ward, the selected applicant will be expected to fully participate in Common Council meetings, including all scheduled budget meetings, Planning & Economic Development Committee meetings or City Administration Committee meetings (as assigned), and act as a Common Council Liaison to assigned committees.
