December 2011 - Awards
The Ithaca Youth Bureau's College Discovery Program (CDP) was recognized at the Cornell University Town-Gown Awards and Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, December 3, 2011 for their over one year collaboration with Laurel Southard and her colleagues within the office of Undergraduate Research and the Cornell Institute for Biology teachers at Cornell University to increase middle-schoolers experiences with science concepts and people who study science.
The collaboration has been between local middle school students who are part of the CDP and college students and educators at Cornell and involves meeting regularly on campus to participate in hands-on science activities not typically experienced in a middle-school classroom. Last semester a group of CDP students had the opportunity to examine and dissect cow hearts (they loved it!) and recently the students studied their own DNA.
The College Discovery Program is a long-term mentoring and academic support program. The mission of CDP is to encourage and support access to higher education through academic and social opportunities for underrepresented students enrolled in the Ithaca City School District.
To volunteer as a mentor or tutor with the College Discover Program contact: Linda Cimakasky Barr at LCBARR@cityofithaca.org.
Also, the Ithaca Youth Council was awarded by Sustainable Tompkins, the premiere non-profit organization dedicated to advancing regional sustainability, for a "two-part workshop called "EntrepreWhat?!", organized by the Ithaca Youth Council, was designed to help youth understand the basics of entrepreneurship and discover local successful models."
