I'm the president of the non-profit makerspace Ithaca Generator. This thought relates the the whole ecosystem however.
The mayor has acknowledged the maker movement in his public statements and signed the president's Mayor maker challenge.
Ithaca has a constellation of makerspaces to support different demographics - makerspaces in schools, makerspaces on Cornell campus, in the public library, and at the highly-focused REV.
I think Ithaca should have a well-equipped and well-staffed makerspace that is a real civic amenity to folks from all walks of life and educational backgrounds. IG is that to some extent, but we have a long way to go before we can really claim to be accessible to all, and offer educational programming.
Specifically, I would like to suppoort light manufacturing of local products by entrepreneurs and artisans who don't fit the REV model. Studios, social events, and manufacturing space for small to micro-enterprises could bridge the gap into manufacturing.
